General Notes
Testing and Belt Ceremony are important steps in building a strong foundation
in martial arts. Tae Kwon Do is not only about kicking and punching but about
discipline, courtesy, respect, self-esteem and self-control -- these
are the building blocks to make us stronger people both physically and mentally.
Why do we test? Testing is an old Korean tradition
that has been around for over 100 years. It allows us to demonstrate dignity
and professionalism within martial arts, and are designed to be exciting,
motivational and allow one to perform in a pressure situation. Testings allow
students to set and achieve short-term goals on a regular basis. These short-term
goals also lead to accomplishing longer-term goals such as SWAT Team, Jr.
Trainee, Black Belt, Instructor Trainee, Certified Instructor and even Mastership.
Why do we have Belt Ceremonies? Belt Ceremonies
allows us to recognize each student for their achievement and dedication in
martial arts. Every student has worked hard to achieve their new rank and
this is our opportunity as families and as a community to come together and
support our students and celebrate a victory. Through supporting others we
grow as individuals and leaders. When our loved ones excel through our support,
then it is not just the achievement of that individual, but the achievement
of all who supported that individual.
Protocol? Yes, there are certain protocols or traditions
that we observe during testings and belt ceremonies. The following should
be recognized and demonstrated by students and parents out of courtesy and
respect to one another:
*Arrive on time.
*Stay until the event is over – special permission from the Chief
or Head Instructor is required in advanced if a student cannot stay the
entire time.
*Students and their families should refrain from talking and are expected
to sit quietly and demonstrate Black Belt attitudes the entire event.
*Clapping and cheering are permissible, encouraged and appreciated!
*Most important – have a good time - enjoy the opportunity to witness
our students achieve their goals and strive towards Black Belt Excellence.
