Many parents have asked our instructors about ways to encourage their child and improve motivation and retention in class.
Regular attendance is one of the best ways to address this issue. Having to to play "catch-up" is one of the biggest enemies of being motivated. Students who attend class on a regular basis gain the tools they need to progress and stay motivated!
It is our goal, as Instructors, to teach qualities such as courtesy, respect, leadership skills, focus, speed, fun, power, automatic reflexes and much more. When students attend classes irregularly, that impacts the whole class, and students cannot focus on the above traits. Instead, students have to play "catch-up" and place emphasis on memorization. In any learning environment, such as our Tae Kwon Do school, regular repetition is vital to learning and retention.
Irregular attendance sometimes cannot be helped. If this happens, it is important to either adjust the expectation of the student's goals or adjust their training schedule.
Testing is one way to reward your child for the hard work and effort they have put into their Tae Kwon Do training. Many factors can lead to someone testing, such as scheduling, attendance, effort, and skil. Success is setting and resetting your goal and then eventually reaching it. The only failure would be to not try to move forward.
To prevent frustration, discouragement, lack of confidence, and soon lack of motivation, a private lesson may prove to be helpful, or, even coming to class more often. Many parents have found it valuable to purchase a video tape/DVD and schedule a private lesson.
Although catching up can be frustrating, getting help and being proactive can cast a light at the end of that tunnel. Once a student fights their way through the frustration, discouragement, and lack of motivation, students find a deeper stronger self to be proud of. And, that is what success is all about.
